The Department of Health (DOH) warned the public against consuming frozen eggs which, according to the agency, can be a source of contamination.

In a briefing, DOH Officer-in-Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire said frozen eggs can possibly cause food poisoning since raw foods are suitable for the growth of bacteria, such as salmonella and e.coli.

According to Vergeire, these bacteria are known to cause infection, diarrhea, stomach pains, fever, nausea, and vomiting.

The Health secretary also reminded the public to “carefully inspect the products before purchasing,” and advised that upon buying eggs, “make sure it is clean, no visible cracks, no drooping egg whites, and no foul or awful smell.”

She also advised the public to thoroughly cook the eggs before consuming.

Customers turn to buying frozen eggs as an alternative to the rising price of regular eggs.

Frozen eggs are reportedly being sold at P55 to P60 per kilo in markets while a tray of medium-sized eggs cost P270. -ag
