The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) assured the consuming public that there will be sufficient supply of fish ahead of the Holy Week, when a higher demand for fish is expected.

In a media briefing Wednesday, March 15, DA-BFAR Chief Information Officer Nazario Briguera said there will be enough supply of fish especially at this time, as major fishing grounds in the country have reopened after the annual imposition of closed fishing seasons.

“Dahil nasa peak season tayo ngayon ng fishing activity, we expect na kaya nating punan iyong supply kahit tumaas ang demand sa Mahal na Araw,” Briguera explained.

Meanwhile, he noted that there could be lower fish output in Oriental Mindoro due to the oil spill brought by the sunken oil tanker MT Princess Empress on Feb. 28.

“Pero hindi namin nakikita na magkakaroon ng pangmalawakang kakulangan sa presyo ng isda because of the oil spill,” he clarified.

Meanwhile, despite having a sufficient supply for the coming months, the DA-BFAR disclosed that there will be a possible supply deficit come the third quarter of 2023.

This, once fishing bans will be imposed again on various fishing grounds to give way to replenish the dwindling supply of fish in the ocean. – cf/With reports from Clay Pardilla-ag
