Tropical cyclone “Mawar,” which was downgraded to typhoon category, may still intensify and revert to super typhoon category, the weather bureau said in its press briefing Wednesday afternoon.

“Mawar” will remain under the typhoon category in the next 12 hours, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

“Malawak pa ang karagatang tatahakin nito, posibleng ‘yung mainit na sea surface temperature ay makadagdag pa sa enerhiya para lalo o muling lumakas at maging isang super typhoon,” PAGASA weather forecaster Chris Perez said.

As of 10:00 a.m., “Mawar” was located 2,305 kilometers east of Visayas moving north northwestward with maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour (km/h) and gustiness of 215 km/h.

It is forecast to enter PAR between Friday night and Saturday morning and will be called “Betty.” It may directly affect some portions of northern Luzon.

Mawar may track east of northern Luzon on Sunday morning and east of extreme northern Luzon on Monday morning.

We’re not also ruling out the possibility na baka magtaas tayo ng warning signal,” he added. – gb
