The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is eyeing to use internet voting as the only voting method for Filipino absentee voters once the plan for online voting is implemented by mid term elections.

The poll body is set to prepare and to further into the details of internet voting.

Comelec chairperson George Erwin Garcia said safety features will be incorporated into the process to ensure its security and integrity.

“Dapat secured, mas maayos at may integridad yung result at kayang ma-verify kung talagang yung results ay tama at tunay. Sisiguraduhin po natin ‘yan,” he said.

Comelec said the move for online voting will improve overseas voter turnout, noting that 34% and 31% of registered overseas absentee voters did not cast their votes in the 2022 elections and 2010 elections, respectively.

Garcia said other current methods for overseas absentee voting, such as in-person and mail-in, may be eliminated if internet voting is preferred by overseas voters. – gb
