The Department of Health (DOH) noted on Thursday, Aug. 3, a 42% increase in leptospirosis cases from June 18 to July 1.

DOH reported 182 new cases of leptospirosis from June 18 to July 1, noting numbers may still increase with late reports.

The latest figures pushed the total to 2,079 cases.

Central Luzon exhibited continuous increase in cases, reporting nine cases from July 2 to 15.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila, Cordillera, Cagayan Valley, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, and Caraga showed an increase in cases with seven to 53 new cases.

Ilocos Region and Bicol Region also had an increase in cases with nine and three cases reported, respectively.

DOH advised the public against crossing floodwaters and drinking contaminated water.

“Sa oras ng pagbaha, iwasan ang paglusong sa baha, kung hindi maiiwasan, magsuot ng bota,” DOH said.

“Huwag uminom ng marumi at kontaminadong tubig – hindi lamang tuwing may baha kundi sa araw-araw – dahil maraming mga mikrobyo sa maruming tubig na makasasama sa ating katawan,” it added.

The Health department also reminded the public to practice the 5S Strategy: search and destroy mosquito breeding sites; uphold self-protection like using of insect repellents; seek early consultation at the nearest health care facility; support fogging, spraying, and misting in hot spot areas; and sustain hydration.

Outbreaks of leptospirosis are usually caused by exposure to floodwaters contaminated by animal pee. -ag
