Magnitude 5.7 quake hits Surigao del Sur

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Surigao del Sur on Wednesday evening, Jan. 17, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

State seismologists reported that the earthquake hit 28 kilometers (km) northeast of Hinatuan town around 8:32 p.m.

The tectonic quake had a depth of focus of 23 km. 

Based on the earthquake information bulletin updated by Phivolcs at 9:12 p.m., the tremor was an aftershock of the 7.4-magnitude quake that struck the province last Dec. 2, 2023.

Aside from Hinatuan, Intensity V was also felt in the city of Bislig, Surigao del Sur. 

Intensity IV was detected in Tagbina in Surigao del Sur and Butuan City, Agusan del Norte. 

Meanwhile, Intensity III was also felt in Cagwait and Tandag City, Surigao del Sur; Maco, Nabunturan, and Pantukan in Davao de Oro and; Gingoog City and Magsaysay in Misamis Oriental. 

Intensity II was recorded in Davao City; Cagayan de Oro City; Libona, San Fernando, and Talakag in Bukidnon; and Balingasag, Misamis Oriental. 

Intensity I was felt in Catarman, Guinsiliban, Mambajao, and Sagay in Camiguin. 

No aftershocks were expected according to Phivolcs. – cf
