Magnitude 6.1 quake hits Catanduanes

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake jolted the waters off Catanduanes Wednesday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

In its earthquake information bulletin, Phivolcs said the tremor struck 76 kilometers northeast of Bagamanoc town around 5:19 a.m.

The tectonic quake had a depth of focus of 38 km.

Phivolcs recorded the following reported intensities:

  • Intensity IV – Virac, Catanduanes.
  • Intensity III – Gatchitorena, Cabusao, Ragay, Gainza, Goa, and Lagonoy, Camarines Sur; Palapag, Laoang, Pambujan, San Roque, and Mondragon, Northern Samar;
  • Intensity II – Paracale, Basud, Sipocot, and San Vicente, Camarines Norte; Nabua, City of Iriga, Bombon, Calabanga, Camaligan, Canaman, Magarao, Ocampo, Pili, Tigaon, Tinambac, San Jose, and Siruma, Camarines Sur; Gamay, Catarman, Bobon, San Jose, Lavezares, Allen, San Isidro, Victoria, Catubig, and Las Navas, Northern Samar; City of Calbayog, Samar;
  • Intensity I – Bulan and Irosin, Sorsogon; Lope de Vega and Mapanas, Northern Samar.

Meanwhile, the agency also recorded the following instrumental intensities:

  • Intensity IV – Virac, Catanduanes; City of Tabaco, Albay;
  • Intensity III – Mercedes, Camarines Norte; Caramoan, and Sagñay, Camarines Sur; City of Sorsogon, Sorsogon
  • Intensity II – General Nakar, Quezon; City of Legazpi, Albay; Daet, Camarines Norte; Siruma, City of Iriga, Ragay, and Sipocot, Camarines Sur; San Roque, Northern Samar;
  • Intensity I – Jose Panganiban, Camarines Norte; City of Masbate and Claveria, Masbate; Bulusan, Sorsogon; Gandara, Samar; Guinayangan, Quezon.

According to Phivolcs, no damage is expected from the earthquake, but aftershocks are likely. —iro
