The Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA) on Friday refuted claims that the ongoing reclamation project in Pasay City is to blame for recent flooding in Metro Manila, particularly during the onslaught of the monsoon rains and a typhoon in recent days.

During an inspection at the Pasay Reclamation Development Project, PRA Principal Engineer Jay Manalo said the 600-hectare project showed that it did not obstruct any natural waterways that carry rainwater from Metro Manila to Manila Bay.

“Makikita niyo po dito, hindi na umaabot sa may Dolomite Beach ang basura, na dati ay sumasampa doon at nagdudulot ng pagbabara sa mga outlet,” Manalo said.

He added that the project has been effective in intercepting trash from nearby provinces before reaching the bay’s outlet points, helping prevent blockages that contribute to urban flooding.

The PRA also clarified that only the Pasay reclamation project has received full government approval and is currently ongoing, while other proposed developments in the Manila Bay area remain suspended, including their planning and implementation.

The agency emphasized that the Pasay project is equipped with environmental safeguards and drainage features to help mitigate, not worsen, flooding and pollution in Metro Manila.
