The Philippine government has expressed its deepest sympathy to the people of Afghanistan following an earthquake and a series of aftershocks that claimed many lives and caused widespread devastation.

In a statement issued Monday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the government and the Filipino people mourn with Afghan families who have lost loved ones, while also wishing a speedy recovery for the injured.

“We recognize the courage of first responders and volunteers who continue lifesaving work under extremely difficult conditions,” the DFA said.

It added the Philippines stands in solidarity with Afghanistan as it begins the long process of healing and rebuilding.

The statement comes as rescue and relief operations intensify in quake-hit areas, where Afghan authorities and humanitarian groups are racing against time to provide aid and shelter to affected communities.

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan’s eastern mountainous provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar on Aug. 31, followed by multiple tremors registering up to magnitude 6.2.

The initial quake resulted in over 2,200 fatalities and more than 3,600 injuries. Thousands of homes were destroyed, causing massive displacement. (PNA)
