The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified its support for transport regulators in going after unauthorized fare increases, warning public utility vehicle operators against exploiting the ongoing spike in fuel prices.

PNP Chief PGen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said police units nationwide are now actively assisting the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) in monitoring transport companies suspected of imposing illegal fare hikes.

“Our mandate extends to looking after the welfare of the riding public. We will ensure that rules and regulations are strictly followed as part of the PNP’s commitment to protect the commuters during these challenging times,” he said in a statement Tuesday.

Nartatez called on the public to report transport firms engaging in unauthorized fare increases.

“We urge all our kababayan to report any incident of unauthorized fare increase. This must not be tolerated, otherwise, this will encourage others to do the same,” he said.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) earlier warned that violators may face a show-cause order and possible suspension of their licenses, in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to defer fare hikes.

To enforce compliance on the ground, the PNP said it is deploying personnel to monitor terminals and transport hubs, while strengthening hotlines and complaint channels, including those on its social media platforms.

The move comes as the government continues to provide subsidies to drivers and transport workers to cushion the impact of rising petroleum prices.

Nartatez said the police will also ramp up coordination with transport agencies, including the DOTr, through joint inspections and random checkpoint operations in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Nartatez also commended police units in Quezon City for their swift action in resolving a reported “gas-and-run” incident, underscoring the need for vigilance amid fuel-related concerns.

According to the PNP chief, personnel of the La Loma Police Station, under the Quezon City Police District, facilitated the surrender of a driver who allegedly fled without paying P5,196 worth of fuel at a gasoline station in Balintawak on March 22.

“We commend the swift action of our police teams in Quezon City. This is a manifestation of your PNP’s commitment to serve and protect the people from those who brazenly violate the law,” he said.

Police said coordination between station personnel and responding officers led to the suspect’s immediate identification and eventual surrender.

Nartatez used the incident to remind motorists to remain law-abiding despite economic pressures.

“Let us not take advantage of this challenge to disregard the law. We urge everyone to let discipline and respect prevail. Otherwise, we will make sure that you would be held accountable,” he said.

He added that police visibility near commercial establishments, including gasoline stations, will be increased, alongside stronger coordination with fuel retailers and faster case build-up to ensure prosecution.

The PNP reiterated its commitment to monitor incidents involving essential goods and services, warning that crimes driven by opportunity or hardship will be dealt with firmly under the law. (PNA)
