Bacolod City sets year-long activities for 80th Year

BACOLOD CITY — The City of Bacolod has scheduled year-long activities for the commemoration of its 80th Anniversary this 2018.

Bacolod will turn 80 this year based on its Charter signed by President Manuel L. Quezon on June 18, 1938. This year’s theme is “Bacolod@80: Full Speed Ahead to the next 80 years.”

For January, a series of launching events will be held, including heritage ancestral house tours, museum tours, symposia, photo exhibit, mural painting, coffee table book, and the kick-off of the realization of the Bacolod City Museum.

Mayor Evelio Leonardia said on Thursday he issued Executive Order (EO) No. 1 creating the organizing committee for the events set until December.

Leonardia himself chairs the committee with Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran as co-chairman.

A Council of Advisers will also be created to secure ideas and advices and mobilize the assistance and support of its members. It will be composed of Congressman Greg Gasataya, Councilors Caesar Distrito, Renecito Novero, Bartolome Orola Jr., Ann Marie Palermo, Dindo Ramos, Elmer Sy, Sonya Verdeflor, and Noli Villarosa.

Earlier, Leonardia met with officers and representatives of United Architects of the Philippines and the La Consolacion College-Bacolod to discuss the conceptualization and design of the logo and commemorative marker of Bacolod’s 80th Year celebration.

In his executive order, Leonardia said Bacolod is now one of the premier highly-urbanized cities of the Philippines and is recipient of many awards and recognitions as top performing in the areas of business-friendly, economic dynamism, tourism festival, business-process outsourcing operation, resiliency, best city to live-in, and child friendly.

“The incumbent local officials believe that the Bacoleños should be inspired to recall, reminisce and remember the city where they were born and raised, in order that they will feel proud of being a Bacoleño and then commit to participate and contribute actively in the noble task of accelerating the sustained and economic growth of their beloved city,” the mayor added. (Nanette Guadalquiver/PNA)
