New P5 coin now in circulation in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY — An officer of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) here has announced that the new PHP5 coin is already in circulation in the entire province.

BSP Bank Officer II Lowen Andrew June Ligad on Wednesday said the PHP5 New Generation Currency (NGC) coin is “legal tender.”

The public should be aware of the newly-released coin and must not be mistaken as fake coins, he said.

“There might be some people who will not accept them,” he added.

It was released to commemorate the 120th death anniversary and the 154th birth anniversary of Filipino hero Andres Bonifacio.

The new coin replaced the old PHP5 coin bearing the picture of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo. Its reverse side features the Philippine plant called “Tayabak” and the BSP logo.

Ligad added that limited edition PHP1 coins with the logo of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) were also released in line with the 50th anniversary of the ASEAN.

He urged the public, especially those who have knowledge of the new coin, to help disseminate the information.

“Let us help in telling them in a proper way about the new coin,” he added.

Ligad said that as of now they had not received complaints from the public regarding the new coins. (PNA)
