Marcos backs PRRD decision to withdraw from ICC

MANILA — Former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. expressed support to the decision of President Rodrigo Duterte to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC).

“I agree with the President’s decision, it’s unbelievable what they are doing to us. I think they forget that we are a sovereign state,” he said in a forum in Manila on Monday.

Marcos, who ran for vice president in the 2016 elections, believes that the ICC is allowing itself to be used to undermine the Philippines’ present administration.

“I think they (ICC) allowed themselves to be used, they have become part of a partisan move to destabilize the government,” he added.

Marcos noted that the ICC has no right to meddle on the affairs of the country.

“Maybe because many of the influential members come from the formally imperialist countries that are thinking that they can order their colonies, we are nobody’s colony anymore, have not been for a very long time,” the former lawmaker added.

Last week, Duterte decided to withdraw from the Rome Statute, the treaty which created the ICC, noting that the latter has no jurisdiction over him.

The ICC has earlier begun a preliminary examination on the charges filed by lawyer Jude Sabio against Duterte in connection with the government’s campaign against illegal drugs. (PNA)
