Comelec extends candidacy filing for village, SK polls till April 21

MANILA — Aspirants in the May 14 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections have until 5 p.m. Saturday to file their Certificate of Candidacy (COC), the Commission on Elections announced Friday.

The Comelec has decided to extend the filing period for a day, from April 20 to April 21.

In a statement, the poll body said it agreed to give candidates one more day to file their COC based on the concern of National Youth Commission (NYC) on the low number of youth aspirants in the village polls.

“In view of the National Youth Commission’s expressed concern that the number of candidacies filed, over the entire period for filing COCs, would fall short of the 338,584 Sangguniang Kabataan positions to be voted on in #BSKE2018, and with similar concerns being raised with regard to the number of COCs filed for the Barangay elections, the Commission en banc today ordered the extension of the period to file COCs, from 20 April, to 21 April 2018,” said the Comelec in a statement issued Friday afternoon.

It noted that COCs will be accepted by Offices of Election Officer until 5 p.m.

“The filing hours on 21 April 2018 will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the Comelec reported that as of April 19, a total number of 859,089 COCs have been filed nationwide.

Of the number, a total of 587,042 COCs for village posts and 272,047 COCs for youth positions. (PNA)
