DENR to search for more illegal sewage pipes in Boracay

ILOILO CITY — Investigation is ongoing to trace the origin of sewage pipe found along the beachfront of the Station 2 of Boracay island on Tuesday.

Regional Director Jim Sampulna of Department of Environment and Natural Resources 6 (Western Visayas) said that they are targeting to unearth more sewage pipes allegedly discharging untreated water along the 2.5 kilometers stretch of the island’s white beach.

Sampulna said that he wanted the stretch of the beach be checked soon.

“I am suspecting more than six pipes laid down there,” he said,

“I am suspecting that other pipes that are bigger than the one found yesterday. We will not stop to unearth all of these anomalies,” he added.

Sampulna said that the sewage pipe found Tuesday has a width of six inches. But he said that they are still determining its length as they are still tracing the origin of the pipe.

Based on the initial investigation, the pipe found along the beachfront discharged foamy water with foul smell.

Sampulna said that the Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer (CENRO) of the island is yet to submit a report regarding the unearthed sewage pipe.

Sampulna said the person responsible for installing the sewage pipe will be turned over to the Pollution Adjudication Board (PAB) which in turn will take care of the issue.

On his personal opinion, Sampulna said that he wanted to file criminal charges against the suspect responsible for the sewage pipe.

He added that he also wanted that those responsible will no longer be issued permit to ensure these kinds of violation will not happen again. (PNA)
