Barangay, youth council candidates sign peace covenant

BAGUIO CITY — Candidates vying for positions in the May 14 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections signed a peace covenant here on Thursday.

Witnessing the signing at the Baguio Cathedral grounds, Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan said the candidates’ poll pact was just for formality, considering the history of the city, where no election-related violence has ever been recorded.

Domogan said he remains confident that Baguio will keep its record of having peaceful polls.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Baguio initiated the peace agreement.

The covenant signing was held with the cooperation of the Department of Interior and Local government (DILG), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Baguio City Police Office (BCPO), Department of Education (DepEd), National Youth Commission (NYC), and the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV).

Domogan noted that based on the political history of the city, campaign-related word war ends as soon as election day comes.

But he urged the candidates not to destroy the names of their opponents to uplift their names. “Let us not throw invectives and negative information against our opponents because even after the election, they do not easily go away or get forgotten by the people.”(Pamela Mariz Geminiano/PNA)
