Losing bet charged in slay of Isabela village chief

CITY OF ILAGAN, Isabela — The suspected killer of a reelectionist village head in Trinidad, Mallig town was charged on Tuesday before the provincial prosecutor’s office in Roxas, Isabela, police said on Thursday.

Charged was Jolly Ladiero, a village councilor who ran for captain of Trinidad, for allegedly killing village head Bartolome Mackay, said Senior Supt. Mariano Rodriguez, acting Isabela provincial police director.

Ladiero, who was then pitted against Mackay in the just-concluded May 14 elections, was arrested and was found positive of paraffin test by the crime laboratory, he said.

Ladiero lost to Mackay’s wife, who substituted him in the elections due to his death.

The filling of the case was supported by the sworn statement of the witnesses, and the positive result of paraffin test on the suspect.

Mackay was riding on his bicycle for an early morning exercise on May 9 when the gunman repeatedly shot him with an Armalite rifle in Sitio Felipe, Barangay Trinidad, Mallig, Isabela. (Bill Visaya/PNA)
