NGCP issues ‘yellow alert’ in Luzon grid

LAOAG CITY — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has advised consumers to conserve energy as the Luzon grid was again placed on ‘yellow alert’ status on Thursday due to low electricity reserves.

“Luzon was placed on yellow alert due to the unexpected shutdown and limited generation of some power plants, and high power demand,” the NGCP said in a statement.

A yellow alert notice means operating reserves have dropped below the required 647 megawatts contingency in Luzon, or equivalent to the largest unit in Luzon, which is the 647-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Sual, Pangasinan.

Lilibeth Gaydowen, Regional Communications and Public Affairs Officer of NGCP, in an interview on Thursday, said there are ongoing preventive maintenance activities affecting parts of Isabela from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“This is because of the replacement of woodpoles and other line hardwares along Santiago-Cauayan 69-kV (kilovolt) line,” she said.

Gaydowen also noted there was momentary shifting of loads that affected some Ilocos Norte consumers on Wednesday due to preventive maintenance works at the Laoag sub-station.

On May 29, the Luzon grid was placed on yellow alert notice from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. when electricity peak demand was recorded at 10,794 megawatts against a capacity of 11,637 megawatts. (PNA)
