Volcanoes win ARC Division 1 title after sweeping Singapore

MANILA — The Philippine Volcanoes secured their first Asia Rugby Championship Division 1 title in six years after sweeping Singapore in its two-game series.

Just like the first game, the Volcanoes banked on a second half blitz to blast Singapore, 38-12, at the Southern Plains on Tuesday.

The Volcanoes won on aggregate, 70-36.

This time, however, the Filipino side blanked the Singaporeans in the final 40 minutes to turn the match to a rout.

Rob Fogerty, who scored the eventual game-winning try on Saturday, showed his prowess in penalties, converting four penalties and three conversions for 18 points, outscoring the entire Singaporean squad.

Justin Coveney made two tries for 10 points, while skipper Steve Howorth and Joe Dawson scored the other tries for the Volcanoes.

Matthew Humphries and Peter McFeely each made a try, while Ishraff Marah added a conversion for Singapore. (Ivan Stewart Saldajeno/PNA)
