LA TRINIDAD, Benguet — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Cordillera on Monday said it is set to install digital libraries in 42 public schools in the region, which are located in far-flung areas with no internet access, to give students access to science and technology information for various uses.

Shiela Marie Claver, focal person of the Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly-Operated Kiosk System (STARBOOKS) of DOST-Cordillera, said they will start deploying the digital libraries this month until the end of the year.

The program is in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) in the region.

The recipients are 13 schools in Mountain Province; 11 in Abra; seven in Benguet; five in Apayao; four in Kalinga and two in Ifugao.

STARBOOKS, dubbed as the first Philippine Science and Technology digital library, is a stand-alone information source designed to bring information to the grassroots. It is a library in a box, Claver said.

The digitized form contains over 20,000 volumes of books and reference materials at the library of the DOST. It also includes educational videos, interactive science and math courseware, disaster preparedness and mitigation videos as well as livelihood activity videos, among others. (Primo Agatep/PNA)
