Palawan expresses support for Constitutional revision

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan — The committee on local government of Palawan’s Provincial Board is studying a resolution filed Tuesday seeking to express full support to a new federal Constitution being propositioned by President Rodrigo R. Duterte.

Provincial Board Member Sunny Batul, the proponent of Resolution No. 210-18 filed during the board’s regular session, said replacing the 1987 Constitution to shift to a federal form of government would result in greater autonomy for local government units (LGUs).

“Regions or states are allowed by federalism to create solutions to their own problems, implement policies for their improvement, and make decisions for their own good without having to ask Malacañang for its decision,” Batul said.

He explained that under the current setting, LGUs have to turn over to the national government a big bulk of their funds, while federalism would allow autonomous regions and states to use them for their own development.

“Federalism leads to economic improvement for autonomous regions, and will create more job opportunities and business investments outside Metro Manila,” he stated.

The second reading of the proposed ordinance will be on Tuesday next week. (Celeste Anna Formoso/PNA)
