Ex- Antique congressman and governor succumbs to illness

SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique — Former Antique congressman and governor Jovito Plameras, Jr. passed away Tuesday noon at the age of 83 at the Antique Medical Center here due to a lingering illness.

Plameras, a lawyer, served the province of Antique as governor from 1985-1998, and as congressman from June 30, 1998 to June 30, 2001.

Plameras was a close ally of then-Antique Governor Evelio B. Javier and the two of them fought for the preservation of democracy in the province and in the entire country during the Martial Law era.

He sought a conditional pardon from President Rodrigo Roa Duterte last year after he was convicted of graft in 2008 because of his age and ailing health.

His son, Engineer Erwin Plameras, said that the remains of his father will most probably lie in state at their family residence in San Pedro here, although this still could change. (Annabel Consuelo Petinglay/PNA)
