GenTri math wizard feted after bagging silver in Thailand

GENERAL TRIAS CITY, Cavite – The city government and the Santiago Elementary School feted 10-year-old Grade III math wizard Trevor Jordan Byrd to a victory welcome upon his arrival Thursday, bringing home a silver medal from the International Junior Math Olympiad (IJMO) in Bangkok, Thailand.

“We are very proud and honored na may student tayo na nagbibigay ng karangalan sa ating bayan. Tunay lang na ang Batang GenTri may angking galing (we are very proud and honored that we have a student who gave honor to our country. This is real proof that a GenTri child is gifted with intelligence),” Mayor Antonio Ferrer said during the victory welcome.

Byrd, an elementary grade schooler from Santiago Elementary School here, joined the Math Olympiad in Thailand from July 27 to 31, accompanied by his coach Ana Domondon and the School Principal Josenia Hernando.

Byrd ranked 23 out of 52 awardees from various countries in the tilt category.

Department of Education (DepEd) officials, led by Dr. Edna Bayot and Dr. Lori Garcia, welcomed and congratulated the winning Math whiz kid, a product from a public elementary school here.

Officials said Byrd serves as student model who brought hopes that even students from public schools could excel viz a viz their private school counterparts.

IJMO is an international mathematics competition held yearly in different host countries across Asia through the collaboration of Mathematics Societies in Asian countries to hone the potential young math talents in each Asian country.
