DSWD assures aid to Antique LGUs

SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique — The Department of Social Welfare and Development 6 (Western Visayas) has assured its readiness to provide assistance to families in Antique who were affected by the southwest monsoon rains since July.

Luna Moscoso, DSWD-6 Division Chief for Disaster Response and Management, met with Antique Acting Governor Edgar Denosta and Board Member Fernando Corvera at the capitol Monday and disclosed that they have already extended assistance to the municipalities of Sibalom, Barbaza, and San Jose de Buenavista.

“We have distributed family food packs to 70 families in Barbaza last July 25,” Moscoso said.

Last Aug. 8, she said, 425 families in San Jose de Buenavista and 345 families in Sibalom were given family food packs containing rice, sardines and other goods, enough for three days for a family of five.

“We also gave nutri-meals for infants,” she added.

Moscoso further said the DSWD is ready to assist other local government units (LGUs) if they forward their request to the regional office.

“We are waiting for Hamtic and Valderrama if they will submit their report so that we can provide the assistance,” she said.

Meanwhile, the office of Senator Loren Legarda has been extending relief assistance to residents of San Jose de Buenavista since August 12.

The town was placed under a state of calamity last Aug. 3 because of the flashflood caused by the southwest monsoon rains enhanced by Tropical Depression Henry and Tropical Depression Josie last July 17-25 and Aug. 2-4, respectively.

Legarda’s staff member Myra Galono said their office is preparing some 2,000 family packs to be given especially to the affected families in the upland barangays of San Remigio and in other towns where they are most needed.

The senator is also extending PHP10,000 in assistance to each of the families of the casualties in Sibalom, Barbaza and in San Jose de Buenavista. (Annabel Consuelo Petinglay/PNA)
