LAOAG CITY—In a country where an average 20 typhoons occur every year, agricultural insurance could be one of the best alternatives to reduce crop losses.

In Batac City, the city government has urged farmers to have their crops insured. Without collecting any fee, Vice Mayor Jeffrey Jubal Nalupta said the city government has allocated some funds for this purpose.

“This is free of charge. So, we are calling on our farmers to make some time to visit the City Agriculture Office and insure their crops,” said Nalupta in an interview Friday.

He added that the provision of crop insurance has long been implemented in Batac City but only a few farmers are availing it.

He advised farmers that after the planting season, they should immediately report to the City Agriculture and fill out some forms to avail of the crop insurance coverage.

In previous years, affected farmers who were able to insure their crops were able to recover at least 50-60 percent from their agriculture losses due to natural calamity.

“Some of our farmers were able to receive PHP25,000 to PHP35,000 from the Philippine Crop Insurance. It’s better than to just wait for rehabilitation,” Nalupta said.(Leilanie Adriano/PNA)
