NPA rebel killed in North Cotabato clash

KIDAPAWAN CITY — A guerrilla was killed while two female combatants were hurt when government forces and communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels clashed Sunday in Arakan, North Cotabato.

Lt. Col. Ehrlich Noel Paraso, Army’s 19th Infantry Battalion (IB) commander, identified the slain guerrilla only as an Alvin. An M-14 rifle was recovered from him.

According to reports relayed to the military by villagers, the two injured female guerrillas were carried away by their fleeing comrades.

Paraso said 19th IB troopers were on foot patrol in the hinterlands of Barangay Lanao Kuran when they encountered about 15 NPA rebels at 5:45 a.m.

The encounter lasted for about 45 minutes until the rebels fled deep into the forest. No casualty was reported on the government side. (Edwin Fernandez/PNA)
