AFP to secure 32nd EDSA anniversary

MANILA — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) will deploy various units to help the police in securing the 32nd anniversary celebration of the EDSA People Power Revolution this Sunday.

Brig. Gen. Alan Arrojado, Joint Task Force-National Capital Region (JTF-NCR) head,  in a statement Saturday said three civil disturbance management, two explosive ordnance disposal and two K-9 teams would  be deployed to assist the Philippine National Police in securing the event at the People Power National Monument (PPNM) in Quezon City.

This is aside from the four ambu-medic teams who will also be on standby to provide emergency medical treatment to the participating public, Arrojado added.

AFP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Bienvinido Datuin said that 300 officers and enlisted personnel would take part in the annual “Salubungan” event Sunday while another 200 would augment PNP security efforts.

AFP deputy chief-of-staff for civil military operations Major Gen. Rene Glen Paje will lead the military host for the flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies at the PPNM.

He will be joined by representatives from the AFP Major Services.

“The Joint Task Force-NCR joins the Filipino people in commemorating this historic event that marked our common fight against authoritarianism and human rights abuse,” Arrojado said.

The bloodless revolt, which started Feb. 23 and ended on the 25th, toppled the 20-year rule of then President Ferdinand E. Marcos.

“We enjoin the public to relive the Spirit of EDSA and help ensure the peaceful and orderly observance of this National Holiday,” Arrojado said. (PNA)
