Aid continues to pour for Leyte quake victims

TACLOBAN CITY, July 17 — Earthquake victims in Ormoc City and Kananga, Leyte continue to receive relief assistance both from government agencies, non-government organizations and church groups.

“All agencies are working together to ensure assistance will be provided to all affected families by the Leyte quake in coordination with local government units,” said Restituto Macuto, regional director of Department of Social Welfare and Development in Eastern Visayas.

Aside from the medical and food provisions, DSWD also gave financial assistance to the victims.

“So far we have donations coming in from different donors. Some direct it to our club, but the majority of donations in kind and cash were sent through the city hall,” said Apple Anido Alagon, vice-president and secretary of Rotary Club of Ormoc Bay.

Alagon also thanked various private companies and organizations who came to support their relief operations, like Pepsi Cola Bottling Philippines Inc., SM Foundation, and fellow Rotary clubs, among others.

To avoid accidents at night, Alagon also said that they distributed solar powered lamps in evacuation centers.

Meanwhile, the Palo Archdiocese through its social action center, Caritas Palo continued its distribution of food items, hygiene kits, and feeding to children in affected villages.

At least two people died and a hundred others sustained injuries after a 6.5 magnitude earthquake hit the province, particularly in Ormoc and Kananga, on July 6.

Pres. Rodrigo Duterte also vowed swift relief assistance to the displaced victims after he visited Ormoc on Thursday. (Ronald O. Reyes/PNA)
