Andanar to public: Verify first before trusting internet posts

Communications Secretary Martin Andanar pleaded the public not to easily believe on whatever they read and saw in the internet and advised them to verify every information first before sharing and reposting.

In a Tapatan forum led by Andanar, together with Philippine Press Institute (PPI) Chairman Alfonso Pedroche and some media experts, they tackled the issue  of continuous proliferation of fake news.

Andanar said that President Rodrigo Duterte prioritized the safety of journalists and media practitioners.

In fact, Duterte signed two orders to ensure the safety of media practitioners: the Administrative Order no. 1 which is the Presidential Task Force for media security, and the Executive Order number 2 which is the Freedom of Information.

In addition, according to Andanar, rate of journalist killings decreased on the first ten months of Duterte administration.

“Kung susumahin po natin iyong mga nadisgrasya nating kasamahan sa media, sa lahat po ng mga pangulo mula kay Tita Cory hanggang kay Pangulong Duterte, si Pangulong Duterte po, sa kanyang termino, ang may pinakamaliit  na casualty in the  first 10 months.” Andanar said.

On his part, Pedroche stated, “Ito ay nagbibigay sa bawat tao – higit lalo sa mga mamamahayag, mga media practitioner, para lalong paigtingin ang kanilang pananaliksik  to verify the information that they gather.”

On the other hand, Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) accepted the public’s reaction on the department’s decision to allow bloggers covering the president’s activities.

Andanar also assured that the administration’s reform to strengthen government media will prevail. | Angelica Bobiles – PTV
