Antique gives farmers vitamins, antibiotics for animals

SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique — Antique’s Provincial Veterinary (ProVet) office will give vitamins, antibiotics and de-wormers as assistance to farmers whose animals have been affected by the southwest monsoon rains.

Joel R. Opina, ProVet’s report consolidator, in an interview on Friday, said the provincial government has allocated ProVet a total of PHP200,000 to be used to buy the needed vitamins, antibiotics and de-wormers to boost the immune system of farm animals that survived the lashing of the southwest monsoon rains last week of July.

“Farmers who would like to avail of the vitamins, antibiotics and de-wormers for their animals may coordinate with their respective municipal agriculture officers,” he said.

He said based on their damage assessment report last July 23-27, losses from the farm animal sector reached PHP2.2 million.

A total of 18 carabaos, 47 cattle, 125 goats, 64 swine, 3,344 native chickens, nine game fowls, 355 ducks, and 55 turkeys died of hypothermia or were flooded in the municipalities of Laua-an, Bugasong, Sibalom, Anini-y, San Remigio, San Jose de Buenavista, and Tobias Fornier.

Poultry or animal sheds made of light materials were also damaged. (Annabel Consuelo Petinglay/PNA)
