Baby dies, parents hurt in Zamboanga fire

ZAMBOANGA CITY— A two month-old baby perished while his parents were injured in a fire that occurred on the second day of the fire prevention month observance.

Supt. Jhufel Brañanola, Zamboanga City Fire District (ZCFD) chief, said the fire broke out at around 10 a.m. Friday at the warehouse of a hardware on Doña Pura Drive, Barangay Camino Nuevo.

Brañanola identified the fatality as Ronel Liguid Jr. Wounded were his father, Ronel Sr., 21, and mother, Jovelyn, 21.

Brañanola said investigation showed the fire started in one of the shacks and rapidly engulfed the adjacent shanties, which are all made of light materials.

He said the couple suffered injuries as they tried to retrieve the baby, but to no avail, from the burning shack.

He said the shacks are being occupied by the workers at the compound of the Pacific Hardware Corporation, owner of the warehouse.

He said the estimated damage to property was PHP300,000.

He said they have yet to ascertain the cause of the fire that reached fourth alarm level. (PNA)
