Church ‘Walk for Life’ in Luneta slated Feb. 24

MANILA — An official of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is hoping that Filipinos will use the inspiration from the 1986 People Power for their “Walk for Life” activity on Saturday, a day before the country celebrate the 32nd anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.

“In EDSA, we showed that we are united in standing up for our country. This time, we should again show our affirmation for our country. We have to be vigilant,” said Bishop Broderick Pabillo, CBCP Commission on the Laity chairman.

The event, which will be attended by members of the clergy and the laity, will be held from 4 to 8 a.m., at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila.

This year’s edition of the “Walk for Life” is aimed at raising concerns over the possibility of the proposed amendments to the 1987 Constitution taking away the “pro-life” provisions.

Manila Archbishop Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle is set to preside the Eucharistic Celebration to be held Sunday morning.

On the other hand, Sangguniang Laiko ng Pilipinas (LAIKO) President Ma. Julieta Wasan said that the activity is open for everyone, including those from the government.

But, she noted that no politician will be allowed to make speeches.

“Unfortunately for them (politicians), the event’s program is for the laity. We do not look at any stature. We look at everyone equally,” Wasan added.

Aside from the one in Manila, “Walk for Life” activities will simultaneously be held in other dioceses, such as in the Archdioceses of Cagayan de Oro and Cebu, as well as in the Dioceses of San Pablo and Tarlac. (Ferdinand Patinio/PNA)
