Cuba exceeds 1,000 daily COVID-19 cases for fifth consecutive day

HAVANA, May 8 — The Cuban Ministry of Public Health reported on Saturday (May 8) that the country has exceeded 1,000 daily cases of COVID-19 for the fifth consecutive day, with 1,036 new infections and nine deaths.

With these new figures, total cases rose to 114,912 and the death toll to 722.

Of the newly diagnosed cases, 1,000 are from community transmission and 626 were registered in Havana, which has an incidence rate of 449.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, the highest in the country.

Cuban Minister of Health Jose Angel Portal announced on Friday that beginning next week, a vaccination program will commence in Havana using the Soberana-02 and Abdala shots, two of the five Cuban vaccine candidates.

The country is currently facing a new wave of COVID-19, leading authorities to close public spaces, suspend the school year, and place restrictions on travelers entering the country (Xinhua) -jlo
