Death penalty for plunder pushed at the Senate

The punishment of death through lethal injection for plunderers is being considered at the Senate amid rampant corruption within the government.

The move is in line with the proposal to restore death penalty for suspects convicted of heinous crimes and crimes involving illegal drugs under Senate Bill No. 207 filed by Senator Christopher Go.

“One year and seven months na lang po ang natitira kay Pangulong Duterte sa kanynag termino. Hopefully maipasa po ito. Ako naman, mayroon pa po akong four years at hindi po ako titigil na isulong po ito (President Duterte has only a year and seven months remaining in his term. We are hoping that this will be passed. I still have four years and I will not stop pushing for this),” Go stated.

Those who may be considered liable for plunder are government officials found guilty of wrongful public fund use; those who accept bribes, commissions, kickbacks from government contracts and projects; monopolization for personal interest; and those taking advantage of their position and influence in government for unjust personal enrichment.

“Isa po ito sa mga nakikita kong paraan para po mabawasan, if not totally eliminate corruption and criminality (This is one way to reduce, if not totally eliminate corruption and criminality),” Go justified.

President Duterte has recently created a task force to investigate anomalies within PhilHealth and a mega task force to probe corruption in government.

He has been announcing names of officials and workers facing charges, suspension, and dismissal by the Office of the Ombudsman over neglect, dishonesty, and other violations. – Report from Eunice Samonte
