CARIGARA, Leyte — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in central Leyte will deploy its “Lakbay Alalay” teams along national highways to assist travelers this Holy Week.

The reactivation of the motorists’ assistance program is in compliance with the directive of Public Works Secretary Mark Villar to field offices nationwide to deploy teams, starting noon of Wednesday until noon of April 22.

DPWH-Leyte 2nd District Engineering Office chief, Gerald Pacanan, said the teams will be stationed in three strategic locations – their office along a national road in Carigara town, the Lemon junction in Capoocan, and the Burauen-Julita junction in Dulag town.

The road in Carigara town is part of the road that leads to Ormoc City, the region’s major exit point to Cebu City. The junction in Capoocan is within the road leading to Ormoc City and Biliran province. The road in Dulag forms part of the nautical highway that links Leyte Island to Mindanao and Luzon.

“These teams, on duty for 24 hours, will deliver prompt and reliable assistance to motorists and pedestrians along the major thoroughfares, especially during emergency situations,” Pacanan added.

The field office also provides proper signage for warnings, directions and information, and reflectorized pavement markings for night-driving motorists, and makes sure that road sections are well-maintained and free from obstructions.

The deployment of the skeletal force is in coordination with the Land Transportation Office, Philippine National Police, local government units, and other concerned government offices.

The teams will not just assist the traveling public in providing directions but are also tasked to provide help during emergency situations on roads, such as vehicular accidents.
