Duterte to discuss South China Sea issue on 31st ASEAN Summit

“That is still under discussions. In fact, many of the things that will happen during the Summit will still be discussed during the preparatory meetings,” Director General for Operations Association on Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) 2017 National Organizing Committee Ambassasor Marciano Paynor Jr. stated on the Malacañang press briefing.

Paynor said that President Rodrigo Duterte’s rally on the South China Sea issue on the 31st ASEAN Summit in November is still being discussed in a preparatory meeting.

“Meaning the SOM (Senior Officials’ Meeting), SEOM (Senior Economic Officials’ Meeting), which is really where all the work is done,” Paynor added.

President Duterte attended ASEAN High-Level Forum last October 19 and discussed that he would rather share resources than continuing with the claims with China.

“I hope to talk with the leaders of these countries and we’re willing to put our resources together with theirs to find a solution,” Duterte said pertaining to South China Sea and the piracy and terrorism in Malacca Strait.

Ambassador Paynor said that President Duterte’s rally in these issues would be a solution which will be agreed by most of the leaders of ASEAN.

“The ministerial level where the recommendations are now formalized and sent to their respective leaders,” he stated.

“I think that that is a win-win situation and solution for all ‘no and which I believe will be agreed to by most leaders,” Paynor added. | (Angelica Bobiles – PTV)
