Majority or about 65% of Filipinos prefer browsing the Internet and watching television as their primary source of news and current events, according to the results of a Publicus Asia Inc. survey released on Monday.
Based on the PAHAYAG First Quarter Survey 2024 conducted from March 14 to 18, around 61% of Pinoys also access Facebook to get their news.
In terms of daily news consumption, Publicus Asia noted that social media surpassed television, with 52% consuming news through social media daily.
Trust in news outlets, meanwhile, declined, with GMA7’s trust rating decreasing by seven points to 47% this quarter from 54% in the previous quarter.
The Philippine Daily Inquirer received a trust rating of 42%, down from 48% while Manila Bulletin got 41%.
ABS-CBN Online and the Philippine Star received trust ratings of 40% and 39%, respectively.
The pollster also shared significant drops in trust ratings of TV5/Interaksyon from 42% in the previous quarter to 38% this quarter, followed by Bombo Radyo (from 39% to 33%).
The trust ratings of DZBB, DZRH, and Manila Times also went down from 39% to 32%.
Notably, it added that the trust rating of the Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI) dropped to its lowest score at 19%, following the controversy surrounding the Kingdom of Jesus Christ leader Pastor Apollo Quiboloy.
On March 20, the House of Representatives approved on third and final reading House Bill 9710 which revokes the legislative franchise granted to SMNI’s business name, Swara Sug Media Corporation.
The independent and non-commissioned survey was conducted among 1,500 respondents. – avds
