MANILA — The gallantry of Filipino heroes of World War II lives on through those who wage the crusade against crime, drugs, terrorism and corruption, Philippine National Police chief General Oscar Albayalde said on Tuesday.

“The undying gallantry of the Filipino heroes of Bataan and Corregidor lives on in the ranks of the police service, immortalized by modern day heroes who offered the supreme sacrifice for God, country and people; and those who continue to wage the national crusade against crime, drugs, terrorism and corruption,” Albayalde said in a statement.

The country celebrates Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) Tuesday (April 9), in honor of Filipino and allied veterans who saw action against the Japanese during World War II.

“We commemorate this momentous event to mark and remember the heroism of our Filipino war veterans coinciding with different meaningful activities in participation of all government agencies, including the PNP, representing the law enforcement sector,” Albayalde said.

Executive Order 203, series of 1987, declared April 9th of each year as National Day of Valor or Araw ng Kagitingan, while Presidential Proclamation 466, series of 1989 declared April 5-11 as Philippine Veterans Week.

Philippine Veterans Week is commemorated with simultaneous flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies in PNP camps and war memorial shrines nationwide.

Police units and offices have laid out security coverage, traffic management, and other related public safety services to secure venues and event areas of the Araw ng Kagitingan ceremonies.
