The Japanese government will be providing 329 million yen, which is approximately P143 million, in scholarships for 22 young and “highly capable” Filipino government officials who wish to pursue a postgraduate degree in Japan for the academic year 2022.

Ambassador Koshikawa Kazuhiko and Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. on Tuesday signed and exchanged notes on the “Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship by Japanese Grant Aid (JDS)” for the Academic Year 2022.

“More good news! Sec. @teddyboylocsin and I signed the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship by Japanese Grant Aid (JDS) for 2022. Excited for the promising Filipino Civil Servants who will be postgrad scholars in Japan, as they take a step on the path to leadership!” tweeted Kazuhiko on Tuesday.

The Japanese Embassy in Manila said the funding will cover a maximum of 22 JDS individuals consisting of young officials from different Philippine government agencies who will be travelling to Japan starting the academic year 2022 to pursue postgraduate studies.

The said project aims to enhance the JDS fellows’ expertise in their respective fields and to help build a pool of future Filipino leaders who will contribute to the country’s overall economic development.

The Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship is Japan’s long-standing scholarship program that supports two-year Master’s and Doctorate courses at prominent Japanese universities for young officials in the Philippine civil service.

The Japanese government has supported a total of 382 JDS fellows from the Philippines since 2002.

Meanwhile, another agreement was signed by Locsin and Kazuhiko–The Programme for COVID-19 Crisis Response Emergency Support which is valued at approximately $6.66 million which will contribute to the Philippine National COVID-19 Vaccination Roadmap Strategic Framework.

This will strengthen the current COVID-19 management through the grant of delivery vehicles and cold chain equipment. -rir
