LIST: Senate, House appoints panel chairpersons

A week since the start of the first regular session of the 20th Congress, both the Senate and the House of Representatives formalized their respective committee chairpersonships, assigning panel heads focused on various sectors and issues of the country.

On July 28, the upper chamber voted 19-5 in favor of retaining Sen. Francis Escudero as Senate President; the majority of the lower chamber likewise chose Leyte 1st District Rep. Martin Romualdez as the House Speaker. 

The Senate then proceeded to elect Sen. Jinggoy Estrada as Senate President Pro Tempore; Sen. Joel Villanueva as Majority Leader; Senators Rodante Marcoleta and JV Ejercito as Deputy Majority Leaders; Sen. Vicente Sotto III as Minority Leader; and Senators Risa Hontiveros and Juan Miguel Zubiri as Deputy Minority Leaders.

On the other hand, the House elected Quezon 2nd District Rep. David Suarez as Senior Deputy Speaker; Iloilo 1st District Rep. Janette Garin, Lanao Del Sur 2nd District Rep. Yasser Alonto Balindong, La Union 1st District Rep. Francisco Paolo Ortega V, Zambales 1st District Rep. Jefferson Khonghun, Ilocos Sur 2nd District Rep. Kristine Singson-Meehan, Antipolo 1st District Rep. Ronaldo Puno, Isabela 6th District Rep. Faustino Dy III, Iloilo 4th District Rep. Ferjenel Biron, and TUCP Party-list Rep. Raymond Democrito Mendoza as Deputy Speakers.

Ilocos Norte 1st District Rep. Ferdinand Alexander Marcos and Iloilo 3rd District Rep. Lorenz Defensor as Deputy Majority Floor Leader were elected as Majority Leader and Senior Deputy Majority Leader, respectively, while 4Ps Party-list Rep. Marcelino Libanan was elected as the Minority Leader.
