Marcos camp asked to clarify magnifying glass incident

MANILA — The camp of Vice President Leni Robredo filed on Friday a motion before the Supreme Court (SC), sitting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET), to direct the lawyer of ex-senator Ferdinand “Bong Bong” Marcos Jr. to name the persons who knew that their revisor brought a prohibited item in the recount area.

In an urgent ex-parte motion, Robredo, through her lawyer Romulo Macalintal, raised that Nestor Borromeo, one of Marcos’ revisors, used a plastic magnifying lens on June 14 when papers are the only items allowed in the area.

Macalintal said after their camp informed the PET about the incident, Rodriguez issued a statement to the media stressing that other people on the revision floor were aware of the plastic magnifier being used in the area and they never complained.

“Plainly speaking, these persons, fully aware that the use of magnifying lens is prohibited, allowed Mr. Borromeo to not only bring the said item inside the revision area but worse, use it as well,” he added.

Macalintal noted that as a lawyer and officer of the court, Rodriguez has the responsibility to inform the PET about the identity of the “other people” aware of the incident.

Macalintal added that Rodriguez’s cooperation on the matter will dispel any wrong information being fed to the media and the public in connection with Marcos’ protest.

Marcos is yet to comment on this issue because of the gag order pending his electoral protest against Robredo.

On June 26, PET in Case no. 0005 Marcos vs. Robredo fined both camps and counsels PHP50,000 each for violation of sub judice rule. (With reports from Christopher Lloyd Caliwan/PNA)
