The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) on Thursday started to remove dangling wires in Intramuros, Manila—not only to restore its beauty, but also to make the area safer for the public.
MMDA Acting Chair Romando Artes said the clearing of “spaghetti” wires is a preventive measure meant to ensure that these cables and overloaded poles will not cause “grave and serious threats” to residents and motorists.
In June, the Metro Manila Council (MMC) approved MMDA Resolution 24-16, series of 2024, to regulate and monitor the construction, installation, and maintenance of distribution lines in the metropolis.
The resolution aims to ensure the integrity of facilities and address public safety by eliminating potential hazards caused by dangling wires.
Telecommunications companies and internet service providers have been informed about the cleanup prior to the operation along General Luna Street corner Sta. Potenciana Street, according to the MMDA.
“The MMDA is here to assist in the project ‘Cleantramuros’ of First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos which aims to bring back the beauty and glory of Intramuros and to make it the premier attraction here in Metro Manila,” Artes said.
Meanwhile, Intramuros Administrator Joan Padilla said the cleanup is “just the start of the Intramuros Administration’s (IA) plans and actions to restore the beauty and significant history” of the Walled City.
The IA will also continue to strictly implement rules and regulations on the installation of cables and wires within its jurisdiction, Padilla added.
The joint anti-urban blight operations will continue until Aug. 15, 2024 to ensure orderliness and safety for both the community and visitors. – iro
