More than 10,000 houses, ₱400-M worth of Abaca damaged in Catanduanes

More than 10,000 houses were damaged in Catanduanes due to typhoon Rolly which had its landfall in the province over the weekend.

“Partial estimate ng damaged houses is almost 10,000 and there is another iyong malalaking mga bahay ay another 3,000 (Partial estimate of damaged houses is almost 10,000, and there is another for big houses at 3,000),” Catanduanes Rep. Hector Sanchez reported on Monday.

“Itong 10,000 ay mga maliliit na bahay na especially totally washed out the coastal line, iyong tinamaan ng bagyo (The 10,000 are small houses totally washed out in the coastal line and were hit by the typhoon),” Sanchez added.

Citing an aerial survey by the Office of Civil Defense, Catanduanes Governor Joseph Cua reported an estimated 65 percent damage to houses made of light materials which affected about 15,000 families. Cua also disclosed that majority of their power lines were destroyed by the typhoon and are still up for repair. Their water facilities were also affected.

“Eighty percent ang sira ng electric facilities, mga poste, mga transformer. Ganoon ang damage namin ngayon dito (Eighty percent of damage was recorded in electic posts, and transformers)” he stated.

“Wala kaming tubig ngayon. Iyong may mga individual deep well ang gumagana sa aming ngayon (We do not have water for now except fpr individual deep wells),” he added.

According to Cua, the damage to Abaca which is their “main product” reached ₱400 million, and other crops at ₱200 million.

Catandauanes have five casualties and four injured. “‘Yung lima pong patay, nalunod po habang tumatawid sa ilog (The five who died drowned while crossing the river),” he stated. – PTV News Online
