MWSS: No water disconnection during ECQ

By Cleizl Pardilla

Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) Regulatory Chief Attorney Patrick Ty has ordered both Maynilad Water Services, Inc. and Manila Water Company, Inc. to suspend their water disconnection activities in the areas under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

Ty also directed the two water firms to “ensure the availability of an uninterrupted 24-hour water supply within their service areas.”

The two water concessionaires were asked to “bill their customers based on actual water consumption, and help minimize billing complaints that may abound if the customers were to be billed based on average consumption.”

They were also directed to ensure that their meter readers and other personnel follow the minimum health standards when meter reading and billing their customers.

The MWSS also appealed to local government units in Metro Manila, Cavite, and Rizal to allow the meter readers of Maynilad and Manila Water to conduct their on-site water meter reading and billing operations during the ECQ period.
