NCCP anticipates Con-com to work ‘independently, judiciously’

MANILA — The National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP) is hoping that the consultative committee (Con-com) which was created to propose amendments to the 1987 Constitution will be independent.

The group said they are praying for the committee which is headed by former Supreme Court (SC) chief justice Reynato Puno, “will work independently and judiciously.”

Likewise, they are hoping that the panel will decide to retain the vital provisions of the 1987 Constitution.

“We pray that the preservation of human rights and the protection of our sovereignty and patrimony shall be paramount in its deliberations and ultimate proposals,” said the NCCP.

The largest non-Catholic Church organization in the Philippines noted that creation of the committee is a “positive step.”

“We view the creation of the Consultative Committee as a positive step. We pray for the Committee, especially its chairman, Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno, (Ret.),” the group added.

The religious organization asked its members to pray in order for “God may so direct the affairs of this nation”.

“We invite our constituency to study this concern prayerfully, deliberately, and with a sense of responsibility to future generations,” said the NCCP.

Last December, President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the creation of a consultative committee that will submit recommendations on amendments to the Charter.

The 25-member panel has six months to “study, conduct consultations, and review” the provisions of the 1987 Constitution. (Ferdinand Patinio/PNA)
