Paalam secures bronze medal

Boxer Carlo Paalam eliminated Uzbekistani opponent Shakhobidin Zoirov in the men’s flyweight quarterfinals at the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday (Aug. 3) morning.

Paalam is now assured of at least a bronze medal following his victory over his opponent via a split decision. He has now secured a spot in the semifinals after this win.

The Filipino boxer dominated his Uzbekistani opponent in round one to capture the vote of the judges. The fight was stopped at the 1:40 mark of round two after Zoirov sustained a cut.

Based on the scorecards, four judges favored Paalam while one decided that the fight was a draw.

Paalam will face Ryomei Tanaka of Japan in the semifinals on Aug. 5.

On July 31, Paalam edged Algerian foe Mohamed Flissi via unanimous decision, securing his spot in the flyweight division. (PTV Sports)/NGS-jlo
