President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. called on Filipinos to make respect, consent, and fairness “everyday practices,” as the country begins the annual 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW) on Tuesday amid persistent concerns over gender-based abuses nationwide.

In his message, Marcos said the campaign serves as a reminder that advancing women’s rights “must be a perpetual mission and advocacy.”

He emphasized that ensuring women’s safety and well-being is essential to national progress.

“When we secure their peace and happiness, we create conditions that allow them to realize their full potential—a necessary requisite for our nation to truly grow and flourish,” the President said.

Marcos Jr. also recognized the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) for its continued role in implementing and promoting laws on women’s rights and empowerment.

“By engaging institutions and the public in campaigns such as this, you become the steadfast and dependable authority in enforcing laws and policies that champion equality and justice,” he said.

He urged citizens and government workers alike to be vigilant and compassionate in supporting women who face abuse.

“Let us strive to protect and listen to every woman, ensuring she feels and knows she is always safe, heard, and supported,” Marcos Jr. said.

The President also encouraged the public to “challenge words and habits that harm” and to “lead with fairness,” saying cultural change is key to ending violence.

“Let us be the generation that ends the long shadow of violence and welcomes a Bagong Pilipinas where every woman walks without fear, speaks without apology, and dreams without limit,” he added.

The 18-Day Campaign to End VAW, observed annually from Nov. 25 to Dec. 12, aligns with international efforts led by the United Nations to eliminate violence against women and girls.

It is spearheaded by the PCW in coordination with national and local government agencies, non-government organizations, and community groups. (PNA)
