President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday expressed disappointment over the release of fugitive former lawmaker Zaldy Co in the Czech Republic.
According to the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), Marcos met with French Ambassador Marie Fontanel and Eva Tenzin, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Czech Republic, in Malacañang on Wednesday to discuss the developments and possible actions regarding Co’s status.
“He expressed disappointment at the whole situation with Zaldy Co and that despite the Philippines’ earnest efforts, Zaldy Co remains at large in Europe,” the PCO said, adding that the President is also seeking clarification from European authorities why Co was released from custody.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro, in a press briefing Tuesday, confirmed that Co was no longer in the Czech Republic after being detained in Prague on April 16 after he was found to lack the proper documentation.
Co has also reportedly sought asylum in France, citing alleged political persecution.
Despite these, the Palace stressed that Marcos remains confident in the Philippines’ bilateral relations with France and the Czech Republic, anchored on respect for the rule of law.
“Moving forward, he remains hopeful of future police, legal and judicial cooperation so that once and for all Zaldy Co is brought back to [the Philippines] to face justice,” the PCO stated.
Co is facing charges of graft and malversation of public funds before the Sandiganbayan for alleged involvement in an anomalous flood control project in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro.
He left the country in July 2025, initially citing medical treatment in the United States, but never returned. (with report from Clay Pardilla / PTV News)
