These are just a handful of Dr. Jose Rizal’s countless contributions to the nation as a writer, scientist, poet, and nationalist, whose death catalyzed the Filipinos’ revolt against 300 years of Spanish colonization.
In commemoration of the 129th anniversary of his martyrdom on Tuesday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. led a wreath-laying ceremony at Luneta Park, paying tribute to the Philippine national hero who continues to bring honor and pride to the Southeast Asian nation.
At the event, Marcos Jr. participated in hoisting the Philippine flag with help from military personnel, before proceeding with extending a salute to the Rizal Monument accompanied by a gun salute that wrapped up the ceremony.
In a message posted on social media, the President revisited the ideals of Jose Rizal that have shaped the Philippines into the country it is today amid trials and tribulations that continue to challenge the integrity of the archipelagic nation.
“Let our celebration deepen our resolve to live by the values he embodied: love of country, respect for truth, a tireless pursuit of just reform, and the courage to speak and act for what is right. “
“May this commemoration inspire every Filipino-especially the youth, whom Rizal so dearly cherished-to pair patriotism with responsible citizenship so that we can be of better service to the country.”
He concluded his letter by encouraging the citizenry to take the life and works of the country’s national hero close to their hearts and minds, in honor of his great sacrifice to fight for the nation’s independence and freedom.
