PGH: 3 COVID-19 pedia patients in critical condition

About six children are currently admitted at the eight-bed pedia COVID ward of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), its spokesperson said.

In a Laging Handa public briefing today (August 7), PGH spokesperson Dr. Jonas Del Rosario said that of the six children who tested positive for COVID-19, three of them are in critical condition, two are in moderate condition, and one recovering from the disease.

Del Rosario said their samples were already sent to the Philippine Genome Center, and the common complication that occured in children with COVID-19 is pneumonia.

“Kung minsan ay kailangan silang mabigyan ng ventilatory support para makatulong sa kanilang paghinga,” Del Rosario said.

COVID-19 vaccination among patients and healthcare workers in PGH

PGH reported that 80% of the healthcare workers in PGH are fully vaccinated, while the remaining have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine last week.

“In spite of being fully vaccinated ng ating healthcare workers, nagkakaroon ng breakthrough itong infection,” Del Rosario said.

However, none of the fully vaccinated healthcare workers who were infected with COVID-19 experienced severe conditions.

Based on the latest data, the PGH recorded that 86% of its patients are unvaccinated, 11% are partially vaccinated, and only 3% are fully vaccinated.

Hospital utilization rate

As of August 7, there are 169 confirmed COVID-19 cases admitted to PGH. The spokesperson said that the COVID bed occupancy is ‘roughly about 75%’.

Del Rosario said face-to-face consultations were limited, thus people are encouraged to use teleconsultation instead. – Report from Bea Bernardo / CF – rir
